Meet Deydra

About Me: I am Deydra Williams, a proud five-year breast cancer survivor and a passionate advocate for change. My journey has fueled my commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of women, leading to the creation of Pink Cap Warriors on the Move and Sisters Building Sisters.

Sisters Building Sisters: Sisters Building Sisters is a breast cancer support team comprising mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. Our mission is to provide a network of empowerment, strength, and support to women on their breast cancer journey. We believe in the power of camaraderie, offering not just assistance but the opportunity to gain new friends and a community of caring individuals. Together, we strive to uplift and empower women, creating an environment where no one feels alone in their journey.

Hello Beautiful Chemo Care Bag: In addition to my work with Sisters Building Sisters, I am the creator of the “Hello Beautiful” Chemo Care Bag. This initiative is close to my heart, providing a thoughtful and practical support system for individuals undergoing chemotherapy. Each bag is designed to bring comfort and encouragement during a challenging time.

Join The Movement: After losing my mom to breast cancer in 2011 and going to every oncologist’s appointment and chemo treatment with her, I discovered a startling fact: more African American women died from breast cancer than any other ethnic group, yet I never saw these women at the cancer center. In 2014, in honor of my mom and collaboration with my local hospital, I initiated the Breast Cancer Survivors Luncheon. This event is a special day for breast cancer survivors and their friends to come together, share their stories, meet new friends, forget about the doctor and lab reports, listen to a great speaker, and enjoy a wonderful lunch.

Having faced the challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis, I understand the critical role that early detection plays in saving lives. Whether you’re seeking information, support, or a community of like-minded individuals, I invite you to explore our website and join us in the journey towards empowerment and sisterhood. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where every woman feels informed, valued, and supported in prioritizing her breast health.

Before I close, I must mention my sweet husband, Robert, and my loving family. Robert and my family were with me every step of the way during my cancer journey. They are my constant help, support and encouragement. Robert even surprised me when picking me up from a chemo treatment with a totally bald head! He had gone and had his hair cut off and head shaved and said as long as I was bald, he would remain bald. I don’t know how I would have gotten through this without my faith, Robert and my family.

Thank you for visiting, and I look forward to connecting with you on this transformative journey!

Warm regards,

Deydra Williams

Mom's Story

My mom Sue Elliott after fighting for four years lost her battle with breast cancer.

My mom never gave up through her battle displaying her strong faith, and strength through it all that God knows the plan.

In the face of adversity, Mom exemplified unwavering strength and faith throughout her battle with breast cancer. Her determination, even during the toughest stages, serves as a powerful inspiration for her family, friends, breast cancer survivors and those still fighting.  Her resilience encourages and uplifts women facing similar challenges, reminding them that strength and hope can persevere in the most challenging times.

In her courageous journey, my mom, not only demonstrated immense strength but also showcased a caring love by participating in trial cancer treatments, an uncommon path for many African American women. Her willingness to contribute to finding a cure reflects a remarkable spirit of hope and a legacy that may inspire others to join the pursuit of advancements in breast cancer research.

Mom’s courageous battle against cancer has not only left a profound impact on me but has also inspired me in my fight against breast cancer. My commitment to being a voice for women facing this challenge is a powerful testament to the strength and resilience that runs in our family.

Ashley's Story

My granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Stevenson, was born January 11, 1994, in Abilene, Texas. Ashley was known for being sassy, precocious, exuberant, and having a beautiful personality. Outgoing and charismatic, Ashley participated in cheerleading, community beauty pageants, and served as a member of the homecoming court at her local high school.

With confidence and a desire to help others, she faced challenges head on. When teen pregnancy became an epidemic at her local high school, instead of ignoring the issue, she designed and delivered a program to 8th grade girls entitled, “9 Seconds or 9 months” in an effort to educate young women on the prevention of teen pregnancy. Ashley used her platform as a cheerleader to educate and inform others about breast cancer.

During the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she led a campaign to raise money for research and for survivors, marketing T-shirts, selling candy, and designing a pep rally around the campaign. She spent many hours volunteering for local charities; something she was passionate about.
